COMMENTS FROM THE QUARTERMASTER

Depending on your view of smoking you may consider the news of the past two months as either good news followed by bad, or as bad news followed by good.  In June the membership passed a motion I made to move the entire Post to a non-smoking environment on August 1st instead of waiting until June 1, 2009.  Then at the July meeting a group of people who don’t come to many meetings came in and rescinded the motion.

This initial motion was not made casually or with spite toward smokers.  It was made after considerable research in the business community on what we can do to improve our business effectiveness.  I’ve been passing many of the things I find out to the House Committee, but felt the membership needed to get involved with this particular issue.  Though I could have posed it to the House Committee alone and gone with that decision instead.

The Commander has enlisted the aid of a realtor to seek offers for the Post either as a sale or as a lease.  We’ve already gotten some interest, but no offers as of yet.  This is not a definite sale of the Post, rather it is obtaining information for the membership to use in determining what to do in the event we cannot sustain the Canteen (business arm of Post 2280).  I encourage any of you who’ve got any questions on the money side to contact me and I will fill you in on why the Commander feels this may be needed.

At the same time get with a house committee member, or any other officer, to express what you would like from the building at 2108 Franklin Street in Olde Towne Bellevue.  This is your post and if you are reading this the odds are in my favor that you have not been in the facility recently, if ever, and we cannot do that which a number of people would want if we don’t know what that is.

Presently we only have 30 or 40 members use this Post regularly and I sincerely doubt there are more than 100 members in an entire month step into it even once.  Without more members participating somehow in the Post far more often we do not need the facility.  It is simply not efficient to sustain an 11,000 square foot facility for under 100 people to use.

Again please contact us to let us know what you need, want, or even would like to have considered.  E-mail any of us at <office>@vfw2280.org (example quartermaster@vfw2280.org).  Send us a letter at 2108 Franklin Street; Bellevue, NE 68005.  Fill in a suggestion form (located near the business office in the Club).

Respectfully

Steve Wiseman

Quartermaster

We have been serving breakfast on Sundays' from 9am until 1pm. I would live the chance to cook for you.

One last note before I go, we have our next General Membership meeting on the third Tuesday of this month and this is the first round of nominations for elected positions so come on out and join us. The meeting starts at 7pm I am looking forward to seeing you there.

COMMENTS FROM THE QUARTERMASTER

Notes from the QM...

Recently I signed up a new member.  Robert 'Gunny' VanVynck is a multiple campaign veteran from the Marines.  He is soon to be climbing Mount Rainer and is seeking donations from any and all for his climb.  ALL proceeds from the donations to his climb are to go to the Post Community Service activities.
So far membership has voted to give 10% up to $1,000 to the VFW National program called UnMet Needs.  This program is to aid families of deployed active duty, guard, and reserve military members deployed to war zones.  The aid is generally financial in nature and to cover emergency needs.
I will be recommending additional items to the membership at the next meeting on 15 July 2008.  Some I'm suggesting is to set 10% up to $1,000 aside for functions our Post can hold at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home on Capehart Road.  I was also thinking about offering discounted initial memberships to newly returning veterans.

On a side note is a new membership year is in effect as of July 1st.  When you get your dues notice please remit your dues as soon as possible.  Even better yet consider paying for a life membership.  You can renew or upgrade your membership yourself if you desire with a chargecard on the Links Page.  VFW Nationals web site www.vfw.org offers eMembership for you to do many membership items yourself without having to come to the Post (though we'd love it if you stopped by), or having to find the Quartermaster.

If you run across Jim Staats shake his hand.  He ran our Buddy Poppy program this last member year and has brought in a total of about $4,000 to the Post for use in the Relief fund.  And this money is already going to good use.  One of our members who is newly wheelchair bound and needs a wheelchair ramp installed.  The Post Volunteers are working to get one built for him.

In the past 30 days we've struggled with cooling equipment.  The walk-in refrigerator / freezer in the kitchen broke and so far we've spent almost $1,300 getting it partially repaired.  And now one of the air conditioning units is broke.  It will have to be fixed, if not replaced.  But enough of the bad news.  Membership donated enough in May and June to catch our mortgage payments up in full.  This was quite a feat and myself along with all of the membership cannot thank each donor enough.  But we need more to make these needed repairs, so if you can see your way fit to donate money or time (effectively money) to the Post it will be put to good use and I pray make Post 2280's Club a gem of the community again.

If you wish to donate to Gunny's mountain climb send a donation to the QM at 2108 Franklin Street, Bellevue, NE 68005.  In the memo field or on the envelope make certain you write Gunny Fund or something to let me know to designate it to this specific function.

Hoping to see you in the Post
Steve Wiseman, Quartermaster

COMMENTS FROM THE PILLARS OF THE POST

Dear Comrades,

The response, to our request for donations has taken off with much success. We have approximately $7400.00 so far. These monies have been directed to the accounts that each person has requested. Some monies directed to the past due accounts and some to the reduction of the mortgage.

We still have a long way to go towards our goal of  $50,000.00 for the year. We look forward to everyone’s continued support.

We will keep all advised of our progress with our Bi-Monthly newsletter and on the webpage, at WWW.VFW2280.org.
